IPTV vs Netflix: What’s the Difference and Which Is Best for You?
People often ask whether IPTV replaces Netflix, or whether Netflix replaces IPTV. The short answer: they do different jobs. Netflix is an on-demand library; IPTV is live TV. Here is how they compare and how most Canadian households use them together.
IPTV vs Netflix: the core difference
Netflix is a catalogue of shows and movies, owned or licensed by one company, that you start whenever you like. There is no schedule, no live news, and very little live sport.
IPTV delivers live channels over the internet, on a schedule, like cable: news as it happens, games as they are played, and the shows airing tonight. Most IPTV services also include a movie and series library, but live TV is the main event.

What Netflix costs in Canada
Netflix Canada offers several tiers, from an ad-supported plan to a premium 4K plan, currently roughly $8 to $24 a month. Prices rise every year or two. Over a year, that is about $95 to $290 for one service.
Why Netflix does not replace cable
Netflix is excellent at what it does, but a household that relies only on Netflix loses:
- live local and national news,
- live sports: hockey, basketball, baseball, soccer, and football,
- the evening shows that air live on Canadian and US networks,
- channels in other languages, for many newcomer families.
That is the gap IPTV fills.
Why IPTV does not replace Netflix
Netflix originals, and the originals on Crave, Disney+, Prime Video, and Apple TV+, are exclusive to those services. If your household loves a particular series, you will still want that subscription.
The combination most households choose
The most common setup we see after people cut the cord:
